Leela is an alumna of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a BFA in Photography and a concentration in Postcolonial Literature/Cultural Studies. At RISD, she focused on creating a portfolio of fine art photography concerning the themes of decay and the cyclical nature of life. While her images highlight the texture and detail within a scene, her subject matter often suggests a human presence, though one may not be visible within the frame. She is intrigued by cause and effect relationships, and the mystery of storytelling. Her photographs investigate the ties between past, present and future and how these states have come to be.
Leela's work experiences are quite diverse, including camera sales, studio photography, digital retouching, and giclée printing. She has also worked with a variety of camera systems, such as 35mm, medium format, large format, and digital SLR, and she enjoys collecting old cameras in her spare time. She continues to shoot both film and digital, maintaining the belief that nothing compares to a traditional, hand-printed silver gelatin photographic print.
Leela is currently managing a small commercial photography studio in Framingham, MA, while pursuing her own freelance photography. Her goal is to open her own commercial studio and fine art gallery. |
